Description
William Henry Harrison Autograph Letter Signed "W. H. Harrison." One page on a bifolium with integral address sheet, 8" x 9.5", North Bend [Ohio], August 22, 1832, to Robert Buchanan, Cincinnati. Harrison seeks immediate repayment of a sum paid on behalf of a debt incurred by his son to provide for his family in the wake of a cholera outbreak. He writes: "The embarrassments which I labour under from the prevalence of cholera & other causes are such that I must again repeat the request made in my letter of yesterday to deposit the balance of the money due to H & J. S. Harrison (& which was retained by you to satisfy a debt of W.H. Harrison Jr.) in the commercial bank subject to my order. The pestilence is all around us 3 of my neighbors have already fallen victims to it others are ill. Under these circumstances I cannot deprive myself of the means which may be wanted to provide necessaries for my family to a debt which I had no hand in contracting." During this period Harrison had returned to private life and was earning a modest living farming. He had not accumulated significant wealth and his financial situation at the time is made clear in this very telling letter. Condition: With the usual fold creases. Uniform toning to paper.
