John Quincy Adams Signed Indiana Land Deed

A land deed signed by 6th U.S. President John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) as "J.Q. Adams" at lower right. Recorded at Washington, D.C. on February 22, 1828. The document, which is partly printed and partly handwritten on a single vellum sheet measuring (sight size) 15.5" x 9.125," was also signed at lower center by George Graham, Commissioner of the United States General Land Office between 1823-1830. Bearing a beautifully intact embossed United States General Land Office seal at lower left. In near fine condition, with a few isolated stains. Expected light folds, a few of which have buckled and are split vertically. Matted and displayed behind glass, to the right of a portrait of Adams showing him standing near a desk, and above two engraved plaques. Not examined out of the frame. The overall frame size measures 28.625" x 16.675" x .875."

Certificate No. 8555 granted 80 acres of land to John Vandement of Marion County, Indiana.

"Whereas John Vandement of Marion County, Indiana has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Indianapolis, whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said John Vandement … for the East half of the South East quarter of Section twenty three, in Township fifteen North, of Range four East in the District of lands offered for sale at Indianapolis, Indiana, containing Eighty Acres…"

The U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management General Land Office Records includes this February 22, 1828 land deed for John Vandement.

Indiana joined the Union in 1816.
