West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A coiled copper currency piece of an abstract form known as a manilla with an expanded head on one end, a bulbous head on the other, and a body that coils around roughly 18.5 times. Coiled copper currency pieces like this example were used in important and unusual transactions like the transferring of wealth or property and were worn by elite members of society during occasions of special or spiritual significance. Size: 9.875" L x 3.6" W (25.1 cm x 9.1 cm)
