West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A coiled copper currency piece of an abstract form called a 'manilla' with a stocky rectangular head on one end and a slightly flared rim on the other. The currency piece coils around roughly 13.5 times and was perhaps worn as a visible sign of wealth and prestige. Coiled copper currency pieces like this example were used in important and unusual transactions like the transferring of wealth or property and were worn by elite members of society during occasions of special or spiritual significance. Fine patina has enveloped the entire composition. Size: 4.75" W x 6.375" H (12.1 cm x 16.2 cm)
