Restored: modeled chin section added. As visible on the black and white photograph (AHDRC / Object ao-0092276-001), the chin was heavily eroded before having been restored in a most excellent way. Please consult the multiple photos we have uploaded for your documentation.
Eine eindeutige Zuordnung des einstigen Gebrauchs dieser Maske ist ausserhalb des gesellschaftlichen Kontexts und ohne Tanzkleid nicht mit Sicherheit möglich. Einiges spricht jedoch dafür, dass es sich dabei um eine Maske aus der ekpo-Vereinigung handelt, welche bei politischen und rechtlichen Anlässen sowie bei religiösen Zeremonien auftrat.
Die Vereinigung tanzte schöne und hässliche, gutmütige (mfon) und gefährliche (idiok) Masken. Eine Dualität, wie sie quer durch Afrika auffindbar ist.
