Description
Zwei Gefässe
Mambila/Kaka, Kamerun
Mit Sockel / with base
Terrakotta. H 54,5 cm./ 57,5 cm.
Provenienz:
Nachlass Alberto Galaverni (1933-2013), Parma.
Im Inventar der Sammlung Galaverni wie folgt beschrieben: "A pair of ceremonial vessels representing a couple. The two terracottas of hollow, spherical form assume an anthropomorphic character thanks to the scanty reliefs given to the arms and the details stylizing the face. The realization is very accurate, with curving abstract arms and large hands resting on the chest. The neck of the vessels, takes the shape of a human head, with round open mouth, a triangular nose under the straight line of the eyebrows and crescent-shaped ears. The male figure is carved with three rows of geometric incisions and the female has two small breasts in relief. Traces of sacrificlal patina are still evident. The ceremonial vessels were used in the rituals devoted to the ancestors, the veneration of which had an important place in the Kaka society, a group living in the Mbem area in West Cameroon."
