Description
Carnell (Pete) Smith (American; Florida, 1950-2015). Original oil painting on canvas. Florida wetland landscape with wild water birds in flight over a central inlet with cypress and palm trees, mangroves, and additional flora under a clear blue sky. Signed lower right C. SMITH. Smith and his companion Florida Highwaymen were young 1950s and 1960s era African American landscape artists mentored by Albert Ernest (Beanie) Backus (American, 1906-1990), who was regarded as the Dean of Florida Painters. The brother in law of Highwaymen founding member Alfred Hair, Smith is also referred to in the literature as Cornell Smith. Presented in a decorative gilt wooden frame. Good overall condition, with normal wear and minor loss to frame. Measures 24 in. x 36 in. (canvas), 30 in. x 42 in. (framed). Hill Auction Gallery will not ship.
