Description
Two hand colored maps, both dated 1839: "Map of the Middle States and part of the Southern, Engraved to Illustrate Mitchells School and family Geography" by S. Augustus Mitchell, engraved by J. H. Young. Includes steam boat ship and sloop navigation and distance to the sea, and "Remarkable battles", presumably Revolutionary War. This antebellum map shows Virginia as one, with no West Virginia. Includes details to incite wanderlust, "From Virginia to Persia, 6600 miles" etc. The second map covers virtually the same territory: "Map of the Middle States, Sesigned to Accompany Smith's Geography for Schools" by Daniel Burgess, with population (in thousands), railroads, shipping, canals, etc. The Mitchell map, approx. 17 1/2" x 11 3/4". The Burgess Map, approx. 18 3/4" x 11 5/8".
