Description

Thomas T. Smiley atlas maps are extremely scarce, as they were produced only for a few short years in the 1830s and 1840s. Examples are extremely difficult to find. This one of the Middle States shows Monroe County in Pennsylvania, but not Clinton County so it dates 1836-39. (Summit County in Ohio is not shown, so it is definitely before 1840). The map is distinguished by a small engraving titled Penn’s Treaty, showing William Penn and Native Americans. It is based on the famous painting by Benjamin West. Railroads, canals, rivers, towns, counties and major topographical features are shown. This map is sometimes credited to Henry Tanner, but it is clearly from a Smiley atlas. Coverage of the map includes New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and parts of Ohio and South Carolina. Original hand-coloring. At some time in the past, the margins were trimmed from this map. The map has been re-margined using a reversible conservation process. It presents beautifully with a clear, strong print impression. 10.25 x 16.75.
