Description
Japan, Nara Period, ca. 7th-8th century AD. Thinly-potted terracotta jar with natural glaze. This shape is called Yakko (medicine jar). Wooden box. Purchased from Mathias Komor, NYC, Feb. 1, 1966 (see photocopy of invoice). Old collection label (see photo).
Ex: Estate of Diran Dohanian, distinguished art historian and Asian art specialist. Most of Professor Dohanian's collection was formed in the 1960s-70s, beginning when he was residing in India conducting research for his book, "The Mahayana Buddhist Sculpture Of Ceylon." He later developed a keen interest in Japanese and Chinese scroll paintings, a number of which are included here.
