Ancient Near East, Syria, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A fascinating example of an ancient Near Eastern bronze axe head created using the lost wax casting process. Referred to as a "duckbill" axe head, this mound-shaped artifact features two large ovoid openings with raised outlines near the tear-drop shaped socket, a convex central plane, and a ridged pattern on its back end. Its luminous exterior presents a gorgeous green patina. Size: 5.375" L x 2.25" W x 1" H (13.7 cm x 5.7 cm x 2.5 cm)

This weapon is in the style of axe heads from Hazor, which is described in the Book of Joshua as the head of the Canaanite city-states, and the site of one of Joshua's most important victories in the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land. Archaeological expeditions from 1955 to 1958 CE revealed Middle and Late Bronze age temples, palaces, and fortifications, as well as a range of artifacts including cuneiform tablets, ivory objects, a basalt statue of a god, and bronze items like this one.
