Description
A choice Near Eastern bronze axe head, c. 1200 - 800 BC, cast as one piece with cylindrical shaft-hole with four straight ribs at the back terminating in four long conical points. The upper and lower ribs form the top and bottom collars of the shaft-hole, the two central ribs continue onto the blade as raised decoration and the upper and lower edges of the blade are strengthened by thickening and the blade slopes slightly downward with flat cutting edge. L: 9 1/4 in (23.4 cm). Nicely patinated and mounted on a custom metal base. Cf. Moorey, Catalogue of Ancient Persian Bronzes in the Ashmolean Museum, (Oxford, 1971), p. 49, no. 14 for a very similar example; Ex estate of Seward Kennedy, New York. Mr. Kennedy worked for decades as a lawyer for the Mobil Corporation, and acquired his collection throughout decades of travel beginning in the 1950's.
