France, a second Empire figural mantel clock, the gilt bronze case on scroll feet and with a profusion of ornament inspired by earlier styles, the top with a young couple in medieval costume, the woman with a book, and the man playing a lute, the case stamped "L. R." on back, roman numeral white enamel dial, fancy gilt hands, and 8 day pendule de Paris movement signed Japy Freres, striking the hours and half hour on a bell, and resting on an ebonized oval base
