Franklin D. Roosevelt Important Cuba DS

A stately 1p document signed by 32nd U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) as "Franklin D Roosevelt" at lower right. Signed in Washington, D.C. on July 21, 1937. Countersigned by Cordell Hull (1871-1955), U.S. Secretary of State, as "Cordell Hull" at lower left. Partly printed and partly handwritten on paper. Expected wear including folds and overall toning. Isolated edge darkening and water stains affecting the beginning of Hull's signature. Else very good to near fine. Displayed to the right of a reproduction of Roosevelt's 1947 official White House portrait by Frank O. Salisbury and an engraved plaque. Matted and archivally framed behind museum-quality UV ray filtering glass with document separators in a handsome antique mahogany finished frame with gilt filet. Not examined out of the frame. Sight size: 9" x 12." Overall size: 24.25" x 18" x 1.25" Accompanied by a signed James Spence Authentication Letter of Authenticity dated May 1, 2019.

President Truman declared in part: "Great and Good Friend: I have made choice of Mr. J. Butler Wright, a distinguished citizen of the United States, to reside near the Government of Your Excellency in the quality of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America…I therefore request Your Excellency to receive him favorably and to give full credence to what he shall say on the part of the United States and to the assurances which I have charged him to convey to you of the best wishes of this Government for the prosperity of Cuba…"

Joshua Butler Wright (1877-1939) served as
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Cuba between 1937 and his death in December 1939. Prior to that post, the career Foreign Service officer served in Hungary, Uruguay, and Czechoslovakia.
