Andrew Jackson Important Naval Appointment for Stephen Decatur Single page document signed on vellum, 10" x 8.5". Dated "September Fifteenth, 1835", and signed by President Jackson as "Andrew Jackson". Lightly toned with an embossed Navy Department seal, and expected folds. Light fading to Jackson's signature. Accompanied by lovely engravings of Andrew Jackson, and his famous uncle and name sake, Stephen Decatur.An important Naval appointment for Stephen Decatur, appointing him a Passed Midshipman in the Navy of the United States, "from the 3rd of July 1835". A Passed Midshipman is a term used historically in the 19th century to describe a midshipman who had passed the lieutenant's exam and was eligible for promotion to lieutenant as soon as there was a vacancy in that grade. Stephen Decatur was the son of John Pine Decatur, and nephew of his famous namesake, Commander Stephen Decatur. (John Pine Decatur was the brother of Commander Stephen Decatur). He was born in 1814 and lived until 1876. He was commander in 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War and in 1867, attained the rank of Captain.
