Title/Content of Map: 1850 May Map of Cuba with Vignettes of Cuban Life -- Mapa Historico Pintoresco Moderno de la Isla de Cuba

Size: 16.5 x 22.5 in.

This is outstanding and infrequently seen map of Cuba, outlined by a pictorial border of 16 vignettes that reflect the wealth of mid-nineteenth century Cuba. Plenty details are offered on settlements, topography, rivers, lakes, etc. There is a detailed distance table. The surrounding vignettes of towns, sugarcane fields, ports, cock fighting rings and other then relevant views include some of the most important early reflections produced by its first lithographer, P. T. F. Mialhe. And then B. May, a Havana merchant, basically and scandalously to some, had the map reissued from Germany, then a seat of map-making, selling it subsequently at a somewhat lower price in Cuba. While this might seem as a clear case of plagarism if not copyright violation, May did win his case in court at the end, on a technicality. This is May's map.
