(1843 - 1901) Twenty-fifth President of the United States, acquired Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and Hawaii, assassinated. Fine content partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, May 4, 1897, the appointment of GEORGE DAVIS MOORE (1867-1947) to serve as 'First Lieutenant of Infantry'. Very boldly signed by McKinley at bottom, also signed by his Secretary of War RUSSELL ALGER (1836-1907). Engrossment just a bit light, else fine condition, with attractive vignettes and intact blue paper seal. Matted in brown cloth with a beaded gold wood frame, a few tiny dings to the frame. George Davis Moore attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating with the class of 1890. During the Spanish-American War, he served as a major with the Fifth Missouri Infantry, and in World War I, served in France with the American Expeditionary Force. Moore was promoted to brigadier general on October 1, 1918. and was the commanding general of the 169th Infantry Brigade, participating in battles on the Hindenburg Line, at Bellecourt and Nauroy, at Brancourt, Premont, Bassigny, Vaux-Andigny, St. Soulet, Selle River, and Mazingheim.
