Description
A highly stylized mask with curled horns and large flattened nose. Carved from a hard wood and painted with geometric tribal motifs. This mask type, called "Pwoom Itok" or "Ishen Maal" is occasionally depicted with horns encircling the eyes, in which case the mask is known as "Ishen Maal Isheek" among the Kuba peoples, DRC / Congo, central Africa. Provenance: Ex. Sol & Josephine Levitt Coll., NY. Ex-Arte Primitivo, December 15, 2004; Lot 523. Private NY collection. Ex. Julius Carlebach, NY. The mask measures 11.75 inches tall.
