Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An endearing pair of hand-built terracotta drummers, both depicted seated and striking the drum before them with their hands. The figures wear tall headdresses, round earspools, nose rings, beaded necklaces and armbands. Both also present painted and modeled facial features and nice decorative patterns on their headdresses, drums, and bodies. Size of largest: 3.875" W x 6.25" H (9.8 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

Condition

Both figures have nicks and abrasions to limbs, drums, bodies, and heads, with fading and light chipping to original pigmentation, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and great remains of original pigment throughout.
