Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful pair of hand-built pottery figures seated upon ample, conical thighs. The first figure displays primarily red and cream hues and has recessed eyes and a conical nose in front of the flattened brow. The taller figure features clear detailing like red-orange straps around the chest and thighs, a simple loincloth, a broad collar, and ornamented facial stripes indicative of ritual scarification. The cream-hued face is further accentuated with black eyes and brows, and a grey coiffure tops her crescent-shaped forehead. Size of largest (body stripes): 4.3" W x 7.3" H (10.9 cm x 18.5 cm)
Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

Condition
Head of largest figure reattached, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Both figures have minor nicks and abrasions to limbs, bodies, and heads, with fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice remains of original pigment throughout.
