The setting is likely the coast of Normandy or Brittany, France, two popular locations for Gignoux upon his return to his native France in 1870. Interesting scene in the foreground with a soldier raising his sword toward the head of a man while a third figure and two boats look on. Provenance: From the estate of Arthur B. de Saint Maurice, the great-grandson of Regis Gignoux.
