Description
Gignoux, Regis (French/American, Hudson River School, 1816-1882), Niagara Falls, 1854, graphite and white gouache on green-gray wove paper, titled and dated bottom right in pencil, 12 x 18.5 inches, mounted on a thicker white piece of paper, unframed. This is an alternative view of the drawing of the falls held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC (NGA accession 1979.20.45) and possibly a study for Gignoux's 1855 oil painting masterpiece "Niagara Falls" that hangs in Atlanta's High Museum. The gouache serves as the perfect medium to showcase the falls' famous foam. Provenance: From the estate of Arthur B. de Saint Maurice, the great-grandson of Regis Gignoux.
