Description
Open Sailing by Arthur Quartley (1839-1886). Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left, Quartley 1880. Beautiful marine painting with several sailboats and figures. Painting is in an incredibly intricate and thick wood and gold gilt frame (frame is over 3.5 inches in depth). On verso, some potential inscriptions and/or markings noticed under UV light but not legible when inspected. Dimensions of painting are approximately 12 inches (w) by 15 inches (h) measured from outside of canvas from verso. Frame measured from verso is approximately 22 inches (w) by 25 inches (h) and is approximately 3.5 inches in depth plus approximately another approximately 0.5 inches of depth for backing of painting in center of frame on verso.. Arthur Quartley was active in New York and Europe and was known for his marine related seascapes. He was also an engraver as was his father. Quartley was a founding member of the Tilers group that included other famous painters of the time including Winslow Homer and William Merritt Chase. Quartley has sold at auction for over $35,000 at auction. 1% of hammer price for all items sold at Masters of Art Volume II Art Series Auction will be donated to the Humane Society.
Condition
Overall great studio condition. Viewed via naked eye and under UV light. When viewed under UV light, various webs and spotting noticed as well as a potential patch on up right of painting. See UV photos provided. Intricate gold gilt frame has some small chips in various places but is in overall great condition.
