Description
"Troubled Waters' by Marshall Johnson Jr. (1850-1921), oil on canvas. Circa 1880s. Signed lower left corner. On verso on wood frame, centered brass plate affixed reading, "Marshall Johnson 1880-1890". Additionally, after further review, there is inscriptions above brass plate on wood frame in graphite. Additional photos showing inscriptions provided. One states Boston, MA along with Marshall's name and some dates. Marshall Johnson lived and was active out of Boston, MA. Various other notes around verso of wood frame including some potential notes on dimensions. Painting is of a three-masted ship sailing in rough waters. . Similar to Johnson's "A Close Call" depicting the ship "Skylark" near Diego Ramirez off of Cape Hope. Marshall Johnson Jr was well known for his detailed ship paintings which were often very dramatic with romantic undertones. The artist was originally a sailor, and was on board the ship "Sunbeam" which caught fire and sank off the coast of South America in 1870. He was one of the twelve sailors rescued from the shipwreck; an event that dramatically influenced his works.Oil painting is on original stretcher with later gilt wood frame. Painting measures: framed, 26.25" H x 34.25" W, image, 23.5 H x 31.5" W. Johnson's work has sold for over $15,000 at auction. 1% of hammer price for all items sold at Masters of Art Volume II Art Series Auction will be donated to the Humane Society.
Condition
Reviewed via naked eye, under light, and under UV light. Overall all good studio condition. Small patch work seen under UV light / verso. Signature on front legible. Unique brass plate on verso and inscriptions on verso as noted in description.
