November 6, 1753-Dated French and Indian War era Colonial Connecticut Financial Autograph Manuscript Document, Written and Twice Signed by Matthew Griswold , "Matthew Griswold Attorney" and "M: Griswold," Very Fine. This Document measuring 7.5" x 6.25", is boldly penned, easily readable dark brown ink on period laid paper, tip mounted to card backing, some edge stains and corner tip tears. Original Manuscript Financial Legal Document involving receipt of 182 Spanish Milled Dollars , plus "24 Old Tenor Bills" money for several clients in settlement of debts, dated at Hartford, Connecticut, completely written in the hand of Matthew Griswold, and signed twice by him. Overall, nice for display and scarce.
MATTHEW GRISWOLD (1714-1799). A prominent lawyer in Colonial Connecticut, and served in various government positions and as King's Attorney for New London County. He was an opponent of the Stamp Act of 1765, and an early member of the Sons of Liberty.



Griswold served on several Patriot committees, overseeing troop movements, military appointments, supplying the army, and supervision of naval defenses and the use of American ships to defend the coastline. He served as Governor of Connecticut 1784-1786 and was President of Connecticut's convention to ratify the new United States Constitution.
