Description
Edwin M. Stanton War-Dated Note Re: Furloughs for Veteran Illinois Volunteers

A letter signed by Governor of Illinois Richard Yates (1815-1873) addressed to U.S. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (1814-1869), later inscribed by Stanton with nearly 30 words in his hand and signed by him as "Edwin M Stanton / Sec of War" in the docket section verso. In addition to Yates and Stanton, at least three other people have inscribed the letter with additional notes. On cream blue-ruled paper. A little fading to the original letter. Expected paper folds. Isolated stains and ink bleed-through. See photos for more details on condition and content. 7.75" x 9.75".

Yates's original letter dated March 9, 1864 from Chicago, Illinois requested that soldiers of his pet regiment, Yates's Phalanx, would be permitted two weeks' furlough with their families before returning to active duty.

Stanton's response, found in the center column verso, denied this request: "This application cannot be granted Furlough must be strictly observed + cannot be extended by the Department under any pretext or consideration."

The 39th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, or Yates's Phalanx, had mustered in October 1861. The troops were disbanded in December 1865.
