Description
This lot consists of an ink and watercolor illustration on paper, done in the Surrealist style of Rene Magritte (Belgian, 1898-1967). Image depicts a man dressed in a suit, with an apple where his head should be, and a bowler hat suspended in the space above. Handwritten inscription at lower right reads, "Magritte". A ruminating and mysterious piece. Approximate unframed dimensions are 10.5" x 7.25".
Rene Magritte (Belgian, 1898-1967) was a painter whose imaginative style has been a major influence on a number of later art movements, including Pop Art and minimalism. Magritte's work typically shows mundane objects in an unusual, often sparse context, giving them a dreamlike and fantastical quality.
