Item Details
Description
[John F. Kennedy] Golfing in Hyannis Port in July 1963, Original 1st Generation Photo Taken & Owned by Cecil Stoughton, JFK White House photographer (1920-2008).

The reverse of each photograph is stamped and hand-inscribed in blue ball-point pen, as part of Stoughton's unique numbering and filing system. The double-weight, glossy color photographs printed on Kodak paper show President Kennedy and four golfing companions playing on the links of Hyannis Port Golf Club on the weekend of July 27-29, 1963. Slight curling, and with several tiny chips to edges, else in near fine condition. 7" x 5".

In the first photograph, JFK is shown walking on the golf course accompanied by, from left to right: Pierre Salinger (1925-2004), White House Press Secretary

David Ormsby-Gore (1918-1985), British ambassador to the United States and close Kennedy family friend

Charles F. Spaulding (1918-1999), whom Kennedy had befriended in his college days

and Kirk LeMoyne "Lem" Billings (1916-1981), Kennedy’s dear friend from Choate, and someone Joseph P. Kennedy considered as a "second son." JFK is shown in the foreground, wearing a pale blue polo shirt, khaki pants, and a white leather glove. The second photograph shows JFK swinging the golf club, with Salinger, in a colorful patterned shirt, and Billings, in a striped polo, looking on.

These photos were probably taken on July 27, 1963. Earlier that day, JFK had taken a walk along the beach with John F. Kennedy, Jr., sailed aboard the presidential yacht Honey Fitz, and swam with Caroline Kennedy and niece Maria Shriver. Cecil W. Stoughton filmed the weekend’s activities on 8mm frame film

the 14-minute-long silent short motion picture is part of the collection of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum (JFKPPP-35). Two still frames taken from Stoughton’s film (2:40 and 2:55) can be seen at the end of this lot’s images

they show different views of the five golfers. One of the reasons that Stoughton photographed and filmed Kennedy on the links that day was because Kennedy wanted celebrated professional golfer Arnold Palmer to review the footage. JFK was an excellent golfer--despite chronic back pain--but he had invited Palmer to the White House in December 1963 to receive some tips from the pro. Kennedy concealed his outstanding golfing ability from the American public during the first part of his presidency, because he didn’t want to further cultivate a silver-spoon image. The Hyannis Port Golf Club was an 18-hole private golf course designed by Scottish-born professional golfer and golf course architect Donald Ross and first opened in 1903. The Kennedy family were longtime club members since the club adjoined the Kennedy Compound. Less than ten days after this leisurely weekend at Hyannis Port, First Lady Jackie Kennedy delivered Patrick B. Kennedy prematurely. This would be the first of a series of tragic events that would occur that autumn, culminating in Kennedy’s November 1963 assassination.
