West Africa, Nigeria, Mambila people (also Mambilla), ca. second half of the 20th century CE. A fascinating terracotta figure of a seated woman wearing a monkey mask. She holds it to her face with one raised hand; her other hand wraps around her leg. The woman is pregnant, with a series of raised dots on her arms and her hair braided into an elaborate coiffure that runs along the top of her head. It is said to be a marriage fetish figure and is a dramatic, unique representation of a woman. Size: 7" W x 8.25" H (17.8 cm x 21 cm)
Provenance: ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, USA; ex-private Maryland, USA collection, purchased by owner in Cameroon, from a Hausa trader, in 1970

Head and left leg are reattached and something is missing from the central back of the figure. Otherwise in nice condition with light deposits on surface.
