Africa, Mali, ca. mid 20th century CE. A very large mud cloth (called bogolan) presenting fabulous abstract geometric patterns in chocolate brown and beige. Mud cloth is one of Africa's most unique types of textiles. To create a bogolan, narrow strips of handwoven cotton cloth are skillfully stitched together into a larger cloth. Next, the cloth is hand-painted with patterns and symbols using natural dyes, including dyes made from river mud aged up to one year. A fabulous example! Size: 66" L x 47.5" W (167.6 cm x 120.6 cm)
