Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. Relatively few face amulets have survived from the Mezcala culture. This example was hand-carved and skillfully string cut from a single dark greenstone cobble to present a classic Mezcala abstract visage. A single perforation at the top center would have allowed it to be suspended as a pendant, hung on the walls of the indigenous' huts, or fastened to shrouds of the deceased when used in burials. Size: 2" W x 2.75" H (5.1 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
