Pre-Columbian Mezcala Stone "Star Gazer"
Pre-Columbian Mezcala Stone "Star Gazer"
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala culture (Balsas culture), ca. 700 to 200 BCE. A dark green stone figure with an anthropomorphic face and body, shown seated, in a pose with arms around knees; this type of figure is known as a "Star gazer" and its wonderful details were made via a skillfully executed string cut technique. Size: 2.9" W x 2.9" H (7.4 cm x 7.4 cm)

Greenstone was more valuable than gold in Mesoamerica, hence this would have been a valuable item, perhaps buried with its owner, an important person, to mark their passing and give them identity in the grave.

Provenance: ex-private Kentucky, USA Collection, acquired before 2010

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
