Description
Egypt, 19th Dynasty, ca 1279 - 1213 BC. A beautiful protection plaque, the obverse finely incised showing a ram-headed sphinx wearing the atef-crown, labeled "Amun-Re" (the ram was a manifestation of this god), the right is inscribed with the prenomen for Ramesses II, "User-maat-re Setep-en-Re".
The other side is decorated with numerous s3 ("protection") hieroglyphs in combination with images of various gods. The plaque thus ensures the king with "the protection of Amun, the protection of the udjat-eye of Horus, and the protection of Re, Khonsu, and Thoth."
Dimensions: Length 3/4 inch (2 cm).
PROVENANCE: Ex-private Californian Collection of Philip Mitry, then by descent.
