Description
Letter written in German on September 27th, 1863 from a “camp near Chattanooga, Tennessee” by Louis Ellerbruch of the 32nd Indiana. The 32nd Indiana was also known as the “1st German” regiment because so many of its members were of German descent. Two pages. Please see third photo listed for a scan of the full transcription. (Transcription courtesy of Alexander Foss)
Ellerbruch says that he just fought “another great battle” and that he “came out of it alive once more.” He is likely referring to the Battle of Chickamaugua, where the 32nd Indiana lost many men. He describes more about the battle and that they are are continuing to skirmish with the rebels every day. Ellerbruch says “I don’t know how long we can endure this.” He finishes by saying that he is sending a “keepsake he stole from a rebel."
