Winfield Scott Small Archive Featuring 3 Full Signatures!

A small archive of documents relating to Winfield Scott (1786-1866), the legendary American military commander, including part of an autograph letter signed, a note signed, and a signed check, ca. 1831-1839. In total, the lot features three of Scott's complete signatures, all as "Winfield Scott", as well as 200+ words in his hand. Expected wear throughout, else very good to near fine.

The lot is comprised of:

1. Part of a 3pp autograph letter and integral address leaf entirely engrossed by Scott, and signed by him on the top of the third page as "Winfield Scott." (The letter is described as partial because only the top halves of the letter and address leaf are present; the bottom halves likely ripped along a paper fold.) Written in Utica, New York on February 7, 1839 and addressed to Lieutenant G.H. Pegram of Elizabethtown, New Jersey. The address leaf bears several philatelic markings. Scattered stains and minor holes. 7.5" x 8".

Scott wrote in part: "The frontiers continuing, + being likely to continue, quiet, we have remained at this place, + it is possible, that we may, next week return to N. York. That is, I have written to Washington to say that, in the case stated above, I should like to have permission to repair thither - where my presence is much needed…"

President Van Buren (in office 1837-1841) dispatched Winfield Scott to western New York--unsettled by tensions with Great Britain since 1837--to pacify the region and discourage border crossings with Canada. This letter may relate to Scott's stint of service there.

2. Autograph note on a clipped paper slip signed by Winfield Scott as "Winfield Scott" at bottom, and also inscribed in his hand as "Give my best regards to my friend, Mr. Pegram, + others friends near you. Yours very truly, Winfield Scott."

3. An unnumbered check from the Office of Discount and Deposit of the Bank of the United States fully engrossed and signed by Winfield Scott as "Winfield Scott" at lower right. Dated May 25, 1831 in "New-York", instructing cashiers to pay $232.75 to "Mr. Wm. Niblo". Endorsed by payee verso. Bearing usual cancellation marks.
