Portrait of Kathleen II c. 1923
Oil on canvas mounted on wood. Signed lower right.
34" x 38"; in original Rockwell Kent-crafted frame, 41" x 45".
A pencil study for this painting appears as a full page in Rockwell Kent: An Anthology of His Work, published by Alfred A. Knopf, 1982, by Kent scholar Fridolf Johnson and with a forward by Jamie Wyeth. Likely painted in Vermont where Kent and his family were known to practice nudism.
Textual reference to the atmosphere in which this painting was rendered can be found on pages 378-379 of Kent’s autobiography It’s Me O Lord. “Of the children’s unintentional natural acceptance of their naked bodies as the norm, and of clothes as but necessities of warmth, not for concealment, their own sweet purity of mind was the reward."
