ENGLISH SCHOOL OIL ON CANVAS, 18TH.C., H 29", W 24", DIA CHARLES II, YOUNG MAN IN ARMOR :Portrait of a young man, half-length, in a feigned oval, dressed in lace-trimmed armor, housed in a feigned oval. Stencil on stretcher: "271 NS". Paper label inscribed "Barrell given to me by Lady.. Unsure which of the Barrells this is." Possibly by Simon DuBois (Dutch 1632 - 1706) who painted in England. Condition
Relined canvas. (As viewed under UV light in the unopened frame: difficult to tell about the amount of overpainting [painting is very dark], but there is some overpainting in the head, including the face, and also in the background; fairly large, noticeable repair just to the left of his face [possibly patched there on the verso of the original canvas and is now hidden by the lining canvas]; small chips in the paint, including slight linear scratches; antique molded gesso frame with losses and cracks. Rf, 10-18-2017). Please note that since the condition of the artwork is as viewed in the unopened frame, removal of it from its frame may or may not reveal additional condition considerations over and above any that have been previously stated.
