Description
Civil War Union Letters
1861 Kansas: "We have been alarmed (sic) by the Indians which have camped 100 miles above us. Some 8,000 of them."... "The rebels say that they are bound to have Kansas."
October 13, 1861-Dated Civil War Period, Manuscript Letter, Manhattan (Kansas), About Fine.
This original Civil War Period Letter has great historic content. It measures about 7.75" x 10.75", 4 pages, on light blue lined period wove paper with postal folds, is extensive with some wear and tone. Outstanding content regarding the history of Civil War Kansas in the Fall of 1861. This Letter discusses the Civil War and events in Kansas. It reads, in part:

"The rebels say that they are bound to have Kansas. The Govt. has issued a proclamation for every man to enroll themselves in a militia, and be ready to march at 3 mintues warning. If we could leave Kansas we would as there is so much trouble her... We have been alarmed (sic) by the Indians which have camped 100 miles above us. Some 8,000 of them. The Governor sent out scouts and Manhattan, but they had left. Why they left or came is unknown. A curse rests upon Kansas, first the border ruffian war, then the drought, now the rebel war. People are leaving Missouri. 7 teams of men and women, and children fled for dear life... It is unpleasant to live in such fear... I can never live and suffer with the cold as we did last in such a poor open cabbin (sic)....".
