Description
Pat F. Garrett Autograph Letter Signed " P.F. Garrett." Two pages, 8.5" x 11", Las Cruces, New Mexico; March 16, 1899. Addressed to Hy J. Bowles and written on personalized Office of Sheriff of Dona Ana County letterhead. Garrett makes plans for his friends to visit, writing in full: " Querido Amigo, yours to hand & contents noted, nothing will give me more pleasure than to have you and Henry Baylor visit us. I had intended coming to Uvalde as soon as our term of comt. was over, but will have to go from here to Grant County in an important criminal case, so I don't know when I will be able to get down there. If you and Henry can come up anywhere from the 25th of April to the 1st of May I can be with you. There is a law against hunting at this time of year and there is no place to fish near here, if you all will come say get here Friday the 24th day of March. We will locate some Mineing [ sic] Claims in a District where I think we have a good chance to make a stake. I have property in this Dist that is worth big money. Don't fail to be here on the 24th of this month..." Together with a printed black and white photograph of Garrett. Sheriff Patrick Floyd "Pat" Garrett (1850-1908) is a legend of the Old West, mainly by virtue of his killing of William Bonney (real name: Henry McCarty), otherwise known as "Billy the Kid." He never collected the $500 reward for the Kid's capture, since he killed him rather than captured him. Many people questioned Garrett's lethal actions, as Bonney was unarmed at the time of his death. Condition: Light toning throughout, with darker toning at the edges. Soiling at the edges as well. Chipping at the top and right edge. Tearing and minor paper loss at the right edge, which does not affect the text. Mounting tape at the upper edge on verso.
