General Hooker Civil War Patriotic Cased CDV Photograph
c. 1863 Civil War CDV Photograph by Anthony of Union Army General Joseph Hooker, housed in a highly decorative Patriotic Artillery and Military Gutta Purcha "UNION" Case with purple velvet and embossed copper insets, Choice Extremely Fine.
General Joseph Hooker a.k.a. "Fighting Joe" was an American Civil War Union Army General, chiefly remembered for his decisive defeat by Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. Hooker had served in the Seminole Wars and the Mexican"American War, receiving three brevet promotions, before resigning from the Army. The image appears as if a tintype showing Hooker in his military uniform, his sword at his side. The case is impressive having Crossed Cannon and Flags, shields and militaria on its front and back indicating am artillery theme. The case is in excellent sharp condition, the hinges intact the snap needing adjustment, with just one small area of oxidation to the copper frame edge. The case is marked "UNION CASE" by Scovill Mfg. Company (Waterbury, Connecticut) and is 1862 dated. CDV by Anthony is maker marked on its reverse.
Joseph Hooker (1814-1879) was a career U.S. military officer who served as a major general and commander of the Union Army of the Potomac during the Civil War (1861-65).

The legend of General Hooker's "hookers" became a slang term for a prostitute, and is derived from his last name but also due to the lack of military discipline at his headquarters near Washington, D.C. He would throw parties like the world was going to end and kept the parties going with him wherever he went.

Early in 1863, a new commander of the Army of the Potomac encouraged prostitutes to visit the troops as a morale measure, and reportedly used their services liberally himself. His name has been associated with the profession, he was General Joseph Hooker.
