Pair of Antique Carved Wooden Shi-Shi. Japanese (Edo Period; late 18th century), each carved of himtosi (Japanese cypress) wood-one with closed mouth (femalei shi), the other with open mouth (male shi). Dimensions: Approx. 16x 10 inches each.Shishi is translated as lion but it can also refer to a deer or dog with magical properties and the power to repel evil spirits.Some Cracks in wood as seen from photos-ear loss to one figure Provenance: From the estate of Dora Sphar Saddle river New Jersey-A large portion of the Asian collection was purchased in 1978 from the estate of actress Ann Southern-also included in that auction was the estate of Edwin Pabst-Estate owner had original documentation from auction-----ALL PACKING & SHIPPING IS OUTSOURCED.Purchases can be picked up at our Ho-ho-kus gallery by appointment only- Please call 201-921-6600.
