Roosevelt Franklin
FDR War Date TLS, "My personal gratitude is deep and unbounded"
ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. Typed Letter Signed on White House letterhead, one page, February 5, 1942, 7" x 9". Expected mailing fold; otherwise, in fine condition.
The letter reads, in part: "... the splendid contribution to the Infantile Paralysis Fund through the St. Louis Mile O'Dimes. My personal gratitude ... to all of you who had a part in this gift is deep and unbounded."
Important War Date TLS showing that even as FDR turned his attention to America's entry into World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor less than two months earlier, he still devoted energies to battling the polio that so defined his own character. A very historic, as well as personal, letter.
FDR helped create the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis in 1937, stating, in part, "I have been very much concerned over the epidemics of infantile paralysis ... constantly increasing accumulation of ruined lives, which must continue unless this disease can be brought under control."
E. Lansing Ray, editor and publisher of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, encouraged a group of St. Louis businessmen to back Charles Lindbergh's historic flight and suggested Lindbergh name his plane the "Spirit of St. Louis".
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
