Declaration Signer Joseph Hewes on "Order of Congress" in 1778

A letter signed "Hewes & Smith" by Joseph Hewes, signer of the Declaration of Independence. The letter is in fine condition with very dark ink and a clear signature. Letter folds and light browning do not affect the signature in any way, nor do they affect the legibility of the content.

Hewes wrote to the Governor of North Carolina, Richard Caswell: "we had the Honor to address you this morning... and that time forgot to mention that your Excellency should send us those receipts for the Tickets sent, with the number expressly enumerated, or mentioned and expressed, the Order of Congress we take the Liberty to Inclose [sic]. We Pray this may be attended too [sic] as we run a very great risque [sic] without it by that Resolve - we are with respect... Hewes & Smith".

In 1778, Hewes was a borough member of the House of Commons. In 1779 he was re-elected to the Continental Congress, where he had served from 1774 to 1777. He died in Philadelphia not long after.
