Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An amazing piece of wearable art from ancient Rome, this gold earring - comprised of gold of impressive fineness (94% or equivalent to 22K+) makes its presence known with a spectacular serpentine design. The form features twisted gold wires - one smooth, the other of a beaded fashion - that ungulate together with one end resolving in a caplike terminal and the other in a slender, elegantly twisted wire. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit.
