Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An ovoid earring comprised of twisting wires - both smooth and segmented - made from 97.7% gold (equivalent to 22K+). Beneath the twisting strands is a petite cluster of grapes hanging from a square panel, and above is a crimson-hued, teardrop-shaped garnet set within a form-fitting bezel. The accessory is made wearable via a modern sterling silver ear wire covered in 14K gold. Earrings like these would have been worn by high status women who would have treasured their jewelry - as this was some of the only private property elite women could own that was separate from her husband's assets.
