Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A beautiful pair of wearable 22kt gold earrings. The main hoop is decorated with a large, circular shield, supporting a gold drop with fine ribbed decoration, and terminating in a cluster of grapes. The grape imagery was a decorative element with social meaning for Romans; often shown in still life, for example in frescoes found at Pompeii. They were associated with Bacchus, and later with Christianity. Weight 6.8 grams; size: 1.6" L (4.1 cm)
