Description
Roman Empire, ca. 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE. Presenting an intriguing form with three protruding rays, a pair of high (22+) karat gold hoop earrings, each a veritable perfect circle save the trio of flat-ended spikes. In approximately 300 BCE, the Romans invented the “hoop earring” - on occasion these were decorated with finials representing animals, Maenads (the intoxicated women also known as Bacchae), slaves, or the Greek god Eros. This design is relatively unusual. Weight: 2.7 grams Size: .75" L x .75" W (1.9 cm x 1.9 cm)
