**Originally Listed At $300**

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A fine wheel-thrown pottery askos with a squat circular foot, a globular body, a tapering neck with a rolled rim and funnel mouth, and an applied stirrup handle with a projecting thumb rest. The entire vessel is coated in lustrous black glaze save for the area beneath the foot. The askos was used to hold liquids, and one this size would have been utilized to contain precious scented oils and perfumes which could become viscous when cold. The handle was used to lower the vessel into heated water to liquefy the oil. Size: 2.75" W x 4.3" H (7 cm x 10.9 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Sloans & Kenyon, Bethesda, Maryland, USA
