Description
AN ANCIENT ROMAN STYLE TRAVERTINE LIMESTONE FREE STAND SOAKING TUB, MODERN, hewn from a single block of russet, gray, and cream figured stone, with a flat rolled edge rim, on an oval basin with paired ring handle form details carved in relief above plain tapered sides ending on a conforming flat base, enclosing a circular drain. Note: Similar ancient Roman carved stone soaking tubs can be found in some noble families palazzi throughout the Rome area. One Imperial carved porphyry tub basin, often referred to as Nero's bath tub, can be found in the Vatican. Many of these tubs were later repurposed as public watering basins and the early Christians would sometimes use them as funeral sarcophagus by carving additional Christian details on the sides.
