Description
Unique archive of 23 Oriole Press books (including two hardcover, others in original wrappers), given to Dr. Harold Friedman by Joseph Ishill, founder of the Oriole Press. The collection is accompanied by a letter from Crystal Mendelsohn (Joseph Ishill's daughter), and several reviews. Apparently, Friedman met Mendelsohn in Cleveland; Mendelsohn mentioned her father's work to Friedman, and he took great interest. In her letter (Aug. 13, 1963), speaking of the present archive, Mendelsohn writes, "Anyway, knowing you would appreciate this sort of thing I asked my father if he could get together some items for you. He sent them to me and I am forwarding them to you today. There are a couple of hard-back editions, a number of pamphlets and some reviews of their work which will explain everything far better than I can. I know these will be a welcome addition to your library and I hope you will enjoy them.... Since none of his work is for sale it is most important that it is seen by those who appreciate this form of art." Most of these books were limited editions for private circulation only. All are in Near Fine to Fine condition. A UNIQUE COLLECTION OF ORIOLE PRESS BOOKS, HAVING BEEN COMPILED PERSONALLY BY JOSEPH ISHILL. ************ The two hardcover books are "Kanga Creek: An Australian Idyll" (1938), and "The Centenary of Walt Whitman's 'Leaves of Grass'" (1955.) See photos for the numerous other titles.
